K Camp on Underrated Conversations and Being Independent
Written by Glenn Peoples on February 21, 2024
K Camp has been a consistent hitmaker in the music industry since 2014. Delivering chart-toppers like “Cut Her Off,” “Money Baby,” and “Comfortable,” it’s unlikely not to have gotten lit at a function to his songs. After parting ways with Interscope Records, he released his first independent project, Float 2 London. Despite undergoing vocal cord surgery, K Camp has recovered and is poised to unleash more music onto the world. “I had a plan B just in case it went left. I’m highly favored and covered. I was going to be in my producer bag, get off these records and write songs for the folks if I couldn’t get my voice back. God is good and I was able to come back stronger. When I am in the studio now, my voice sounds better than it did before.”
In the music industry, discussions about being underrated often arise where fans feel like some artists’ talents aren’t fully recognized despite consistently delivering great music. K Camp asserts that he’s undefeated and refuses to be labeled as underrated. He acknowledges that while he can’t control others’ opinions, he remains focused on giving his all every single day.
“Everybody gonna say whatever they want it isn’t my job to stress to try to change everybody’s opinion on how they feel as long as my core base and everybody who rocks with me know what’s going on. That’s all that matters as long as I’m going to these cities selling out these shows independently going top 10 in all genres of music.”

Transitioning from being signed to a major label to becoming independent isn’t always a smooth journey. For K Camp, this shift brought about significant changes, particularly in terms of creative control. While being independent allowed him more freedom to pursue his artistic vision, he acknowledges the added pressure to ensure that every aspect of his work, including visuals, meets high standards. Unlike when he was signed to a label where high-end videos were covered as an independent artist he must ensure that his visuals are up to par while maintaining creative control. “Our job was really to keep that consistency when it came to our rollouts and the branding behind it. For example, I flew to London by myself and shot all the videos and did the whole rollout but that’s the type of commitment you got to have.”
With over 10 years in the music industry K Camp is drawing from his experiences of being signed to a major label and now navigating the independent scene, he offers valuable advice to up-and-coming artists. K Camp emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself and maintaining creative control regardless of the circumstances. He encourages aspiring artists to persevere through challenges, stay focused on their goals, and never compromise their artistic integrity. “Get you a great lawyer and know your business a lot of artists don’t like to tap into their business because I was one of them artists that’s why my career did what it did at one point I had to pick it back up because I had to learn the business.”
