‘The Last Of Us’ Star Storm Reid Won an Emmy in January. Now She’s Ready to Start Her Senior College Year

Most of us could barely walk and chew gum at the same time when we were 20 years old. But Storm Reid has cracked that code. She’s had standout roles as an actress, but she’s also finishing her college career. The Atlanta native is taking on her senior year at one of California’s top institutions, the University of Southern California (USC), and she couldn’t be more excited and focused.

From starring in Ava Duvernay’s A Wrinkle in Time in 2018 to being one of the secret weapons in HBO’s hit series Euphoria, we’ve literally watched Reid grow up on screen over the years. And this award-winning talent is just getting started. 

Fresh off her Emmy win as Riley Abel in The Last of Us, Reid spoke with EBONY about the emotions she felt winning her first Emmy, balancing college life with acting, and her new collaboration with Coca-Cola Spiced.

EBONY: This past January, you won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series. How did that feel?

Storm Reid: I was not expecting to win. Honestly, I was shocked! It still hasn’t sunk in that I won. It was such a blessing to be Riley on The Last of Us, and I’m outstandingly grateful to Craig Mazin and HBO for the opportunity.

In your speech, you honored your mother for her sacrifice, which was absolutely beautiful. How has having your mother by your side shaped you as an actress during your career journey?

Having my mom by my side has meant everything to me, and I’m so thankful for all she has done … and yeah, sacrificed … to get me where I am in my career. I wouldn’t be where I am without her.

What are some of your favorite mantras/affirmations/positive life lessons that she’s instilled in you so far?

Always keep God first. Be a good human, and the universe will bring good back to you. Be kind. To whom much is given, much is required. And from Ms. Oprah herself, don’t waste time on things you can’t change. Use that time to change the things you can. 

You’re finishing your junior year at USC and will soon head into senior year. How has it been balancing college life as a young adult with your career?

It’s all about scheduling for me. This time in my life has been a whirlwind, but I’m determined to finish school, and I always prioritize my schoolwork. I take it day by day, try to stick to my routine and have learned that it is okay to say no. Through scheduling and compromise, I have been able to work while staying on track to graduate next year.

Is there anything you would change or do differently as far as your college experience goes?

I talk about gratitude a lot; I try to prioritize gratitude in everything I do. I’m so grateful for the career opportunities I’ve had while also balancing school. This is such an exciting time in my life, and I sincerely wouldn’t change a thing.

What’s next for you? Will we see you in another season of The Last of Us?

I’m looking forward to finishing up my junior year. I also have a big announcement coming soon about my upcoming summer movie— but for now, you’ll have to be patient. 

Tell us about your collaboration with Coca‑Cola Spiced.

I was so excited to be approached to be a part of this special moment and help celebrate the launch of Coca-Cola Spiced. When I first tasted the flavor, I became an instant fan. It’s refreshing and tastes like a summer day with hints of raspberry. So many words came to mind after my first sip: I pictured long afternoons playing double dutch and warm sunsets. Coke then used some of my words for inspiration and together with AI, came up with the design of Spiced Shop, an immersive art installation and taste experience that was held in New York City.
