7 Getaways to Show the Moms in Your Life How Much You Care

Written by on May 4, 2024

The word “mom” can look different for many. For some, it may be the woman who gave birth to and raised you. For others, it can be a special woman in your life who has taken on a similar role and essentially helped shape you into who you are today. Either way, the mom in your life deserves to be honored for the love she’s given and sacrifices made. So, why not bless her with a getaway to show her how much you appreciate her?

As we approach Mother’s Day, now is the perfect time—although for many, Mother’s Day is every day—to gift her something special by way of a vacation. After all, she could certainly use a little rest and relaxation. If you’re in need of a few ideas, check out these getaways that are perfect for the mother figure (s) in your life.

East Coast

Washington, D.C.

Where to stay: The Darcy Hotel for an in-the-city vibe. If you don’t mind being outside D.C. proper, check out Black-owned options like The Salamander Resort or The Ivy Hotel.

What to do: Reserve a time for her to explore the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Also, book her a spa day for a day of pampering.

Where to eat: Bronze H Street for a unique dining experience or Almeda for flavorful Afro-fusion cuisine.

Charlotte, North Carolina

Where to stay: For a calming boutique experience, book her a room at The Ivy in the heart of downtown. If you’re sticking with Black-owned options, Ms. Elsie’s Caribbean B&B will not only provide accommodations but also a home-cooked multicourse breakfast by the chef and owner.

What to do: Reserve a massage at V-Luxe Spa or a full spa day at The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte. If she’s into art, check out the Gantt Center or The Mint, which are right across the street.

Where to eat: For moms with a sweet tooth, grab her donuts from Black-owned B.A.D. Donuts. If she’s more of a sit-down brunch type of woman, check out Uptown Yolk or Easy Like Sunday.

Tampa, Florida

Where to Stay: The mom in your life deserves to experience the soft life for a day or two, so book her a suite at the JW Marriott, Tampa.

What to do: Load her up with cash so she can enjoy herself at one of the country’s largest casinos, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Or, travel back in time with a day exploring Ybor City.

Where to eat: For upscale Italian, head to Cipresso. Or, for a range of options she can sample, make your way to Armature Works.

West Coast

Portland, Oregon

Where to stay: For coastal views, drive to Headlands Coastal Lodge & Spa. If you want to remain in Portland, book the Woodlark Hotel for her stay.

What to do: You’re in one of the world’s top wine regions, so a tasting at Black-owned Abbey Creek Winery is a must. For a full day of wine, book a more extensive tasting in the Willamette Valley.

Where to eat: Check out Olive & Twist for great cocktails and small bites. If she loves her carbs, Amalfi’s PDX is a fun Black-owned Italian spot.

San Diego, California

Where to stay: For a relaxing spa moment or an overnight stay, the Hilton San Diego Bayfront is a great option. For something more intimate, Orli La Jolla is absolutely stunning and will blow mom away.

What to do: A beach day is a must. But, beyond the waves crashing, spend some time pursuing the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Arts or the Casa Del Ray Moro African Museum.

Where to eat: Luckily, there are several amazing Black-owned options. Hammond’s Gourmet Ice Cream for her sweet tooth, Nomad donuts for breakfast, and Sucker Free for more hearty meals.

International

Grenada

Where to stay: Mount Cinnamon Hotel for the perfect mix of beach and garden views.

What to do: If she’s adventurous, book a snorkel excursion to see the famous underwater sculpture park. Or, visit Belmont Estate for a chocolate tour and history lesson.

Where to eat: Sails Restaurant offers stunning waterfront views with a delicious meal to match. For a more chill, toes-in-the-sand dining experience, reserve her a table at 61-degrees West Restaurant and Bar.

St. Lucia

Where to stay: Sol Sanctum is one of the newest boutique hotels in the Rodney Bay area, and just a few steps away is Bay Gardens Beach Resort—both are Black-owned. If you want to splurge, Windjammer Landing Beach Resort in Castries is always a great choice.

What to do: For a bit of adventure mixed with self-care, head to Soufriere to the drive-in volcano and take a dip in the mud baths. Or, spend a day lazying by the beach.

Where to eat: Stone Yard Restaurant & Bar cooks up authentic local flavors like grilled BBQ chicken and macaroni pie. Upper Deck at Windjammer is a great upscale steakhouse if she wants an elevated dining experience.
