Actor powerhouses like Angela Bassett and Taraji P. Henson and media leaders like Debra Lee, CEO Emeritus of BET; director Melina Matsoukas and Channing Dungey, chairperson of Warner Bros. Television, joined Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to kick off its Black History Month festivities with a captivating and intimate dinner hosted by CAA Amplify at Merois in West Hollywood, California.
Led by CAA Agency Board Member Lisa Joseph Metelus and senior motion picture agent Lorrie Bartlett, the evening was a celebration of achievements, camaraderie and the collective strength of Black women in the entertainment industry while showcasing the agency’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Tasha Smith joined The Color Purple star Taraji P. Henson, as well as Academy Award recipient Bassett, as they received special acknowledgment for their contributions to the industry.
Bartlett and Metelus highlighted the release of Ava DuVernay’s Origin. They paid homage to industry legends such as Suzanne de Passe, who reflected on the progress made since the early days of her career when gatherings of Black women in leadership roles were scarce.
Attendees were pleasantly surprised to receive a welcome letter from Vice President Kamala Harris. In her message, Vice President Harris expressed gratitude for the remarkable accomplishments of the women present, highlighting their strength, perseverance and power as inspirations to young Black women worldwide. The unexpected gesture added a touch of significance to the evening and underscored the impact of the gathered women on a global scale.
Metelus and Bartlett also emphasized the significance of CAA Amplify in creating spaces for artists, thought leaders and executives of color to convene and celebrate. Describing the event as a platform to foster sisterhood, joy and community, they noted that it has become a highly anticipated gathering for colleagues, clients and industry peers.
