Written by Elias Leight on December 26, 2023
Baby Tate has emerged in the music industry as a dynamic force shaped by a unique tapestry of experiences and influences. With a unique blend of Rap, R&B and southern influences, Baby Tate has captivated audiences with her distinct sound and bold lyricism. Emerging in the music scene, she brings a fresh perspective and has quickly gained recognition for her dynamic performances and innovative approach to music. Recently, Baby Tate has bravely embraced her identity, opening up about being pansexual. This newfound authenticity influenced her latest project, Sexploration: The Musical, where she invites listeners into a world that blends her personal journey with the diverse sounds of her Georgia roots.
In an illuminating conversation with EBONY, Baby Tate shares her musical journey while tracing the roots of her upbringing that have shaped her distinctive sound. Beyond the beats and rhymes, Tate also opens up about revealing her identity as pansexual. This newfound openness has not only empowered her personally but has also translated into a newfound freedom in her music.
EBONY: Your mother, Dionne Farris, is a renowned singer. Did her career play a significant role in influencing your upbringing?
Baby Tate: I grew up pretty much engulfed in music. When people say ball is life, music is life for me. Growing up, I got to see my mom navigate her career firsthand as an independent artist with no manager. Doing everything herself was inspiring for me to see. It allowed me to dream for myself and know that these things were possible. So growing up, I would go to shows with her and sometimes I would sell her merch for her. I would do a lot of things with her. It just showed me a little bit of what the experience will be like when I start to do it on my own. That’s kind of what growing up for me was like. A lot of people think I’m a nepotism baby just because my mom makes music. My upbringing wasn’t a place of super-rich kid life. We still went through a lot of hard times and struggles. I just got to see my mom continue to follow her dreams while doing that.
What was your experience like growing up in Decatur, Georgia?
Being from Decatur, Atlanta adjacent. I feel like Atlanta influenced so much of the world and so much of hip hop, and Black music, any genre, but being able to be smack in the middle of it just gave extra confidence that I feel like people in other cities might’ve had to go out of their way to get. I just always had that, because it was always in my face. So the way it influences my music, it just continues to let me know that I can do any genre, any way of expression as possible. So many people have done it and shown me and that’s from being from Decatur.
What prompted your recent decision to open up about being pansexual and has this experience encouraged you to incorporate it more into your music?
I think that representation is super important. A lot of times, I think people won’t even know that one of their favorite artists is the same sexuality as them just because people sometimes don’t say it. To be completely honest, it’s no one’s business. For me, I wanted to make it people’s business because I feel like I have a responsibility to the youth for some reason. I don’t know why I feel that great responsibility but I just wanted to be a voice and a face that can give someone else out there the courage to be whoever they are, whatever that is. This year in general, I’ve felt a lot more free not just in who I am but also in my music, my message, the concepts and the context. Everything has been very freeing. I don’t know if that’s because I came out as pansexual this year or if that was my vibe this year. Just freedom.
What led to the creation of Sexploration: The Musical?
I’ve been working all of 2023 on an album. When it got near summertime, I was saying I don’t think the album is done but we do have a lot of great music here. So let’s not put it to waste. We came up with a creative and fun idea of Sexploration: The Musical to explain where I’m going and where I am right now. Through the discoveries that I’ve been having about myself through music, I have been wanting to create something that other people can [use to] maybe discover things about themselves. Just something fun to give a little teaser and a little taste of what’s to come.
How excited are you to go on tour and share with your fans the whole Sexploration: The Musical experience?
I’m super excited about the tour. This is my first headlining tour. We just added some more cities and I think we might be adding some more — don’t quote me on that. I’m super excited. The show is going to be amazing. It’s going to be choreographed by Fullout Cortland; he’s also amazing. We’ve worked together before on my “Rainbow Cadillac” video. I’m super excited. People have been asking, “When can we see the musical?” This experience is going to feel very theatrical but it won’t necessarily be an actual musical. It will bring that theater element. So I’m super excited to bring this project to life and also incorporate some of my older songs.
