Black Actresses Take Home Two Wins at The 81st Golden Globes. ‘The Color Purple’ Is Shut Out

Last night’s live telecast of the 81st Golden Globes Awards turned more of a blue hue for The Color Purple. The 2023 movie adaptation of the Broadway musical, which only received two of this year’s nominations—Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for Fantasia Barrino and Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for Danielle Brooks—went home empty-handed.
The industry and fans had already been abuzz that the third visual incarnation of Alice Walker’s acclaimed novel hadn’t been nominated in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category. Some speculate that even though it is in musical form, the movie’s storyline complexity could have pushed it into the drama category.
Luckily, Oprah Winfrey’s awards look was a winner of the night. The Color Purple executive producer wore a royal purple custom Louis Vuitton gown to announce the nominees and for Best Motion Picture, Drama (which went the film Oppenheimer).
Two stars did join the ranks of Black actresses like Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Regina King and more who have won Golden Globes. Da’Vine Joy Randolph (pictured up top) took home the award for Best Performance of a Female Supporting Actor, Motion Picture for her work in The Holdovers. Her role as Mary, a cook and grieving mother at a fictional academy in Boston, “changed my life,” she exclaimed in her acceptance speech. “You have made me feel seen in so many ways that I’ve never imagined.”
Ayo Edebiri earned her first award, winning Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy for her work on The Bear. She ended her speech, stating, “If I forgot to thank you, I’m sorry, unless you were mean or something.”
Joyful presenter moments included Golden Globes winner Angela Bassett getting tips from Jared Leto about the “method” of delivering the nominees and winners; Golden Globes winners Andra Day and Jon Batiste lamenting over the length of category names before presenting Best Original Song, and Golden Globes winner Daniel Kaluuya reminding us all that he’s actually British as he rocked his comedic skills to introduce the Best Screenplay nominees.
