“I don’t think there’s necessarily a secret to our longevity. I think it is an understanding that both of us will change, respecting the change and giving each other space to change. And communicating when it doesn’t feel right. It took a long time to get there, to be vocal about things that make us uncomfortable in different seasons because sometimes you don’t change at the same time. It’s about being honest with each other. People say communication is key. It’s really how you communicate.

We’ve been together since we were 19; we were so very young. We had to learn how to talk to each other. We were boy and girl, and together, we have grown into man and woman. Learning how to navigate your relationship—we’ve been through it all, so many things we’ve been through together, and we’ve made it through the fire. It doesn’t mean fires won’t come again. But we are now equipped to put them out.”
