Details On Chicago U.S. Postal Service Carrier’s Tragic Murder

Chicago police announced the (Sept. 30) arrest of a 15-year-old suspect in connection with the July death of U.S. postal service carrier Octavia Redmond, 48.

PEOPLE reports that someone shot Octavia Redmond multiple times on July 19 in Chicago’s West Pullman neighborhood, then fled in a vehicle. In July, Fox32 reported that the vehicle involved in the U.S. postal service carrier’s murder was found burned on Chicago’s South Side.

Police stated on Oct. 2 that camera footage and an anonymous tip helped them to track the 15-year-old suspect’s movements before and after Redmond’s murder. A nearby resident, who chose to stay anonymous, mentioned that Redmond had just delivered mail to her house moments before hearing at least eight gunshots.

“I came to the living room and looked out of the window. That’s when I saw her laying on the ground. I’m like, that’s the postal worker,” the neighbor explained.

Kim Sanders, a local worker, told KCBD in July that Redmond “was like a mother to the neighborhood.”

“My heart is shattered because she was a nice lady. She’d just come up and down the block and deliver the mail, didn’t bother nobody,” Sanders told the outlet.

Per PEOPLE, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service quickly offered a $250,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in Octavia Redmond’s killing. Her family also raised a little over $8,000 through a verified GoFundMe to cover funeral costs.

Postal Workers Call For Increased Safety Measures Amid Rising Attacks

After Octavia Redmond’s murder, U.S. postal workers and carriers held a rally calling for action from elected officials.

“We’re out there, and we’re facing the dangers of society, right And so, we’re getting stuck up out there. We’re dealing with crazy people out there, and we just wanna know who is out there to protect us?” letter carrier Michael Caref said.

Union members from the National Association of Letter Carriers urged an end to violence against workers, according to ABC7Chicago. They demanded increased police protection and stronger laws to ensure their safety.

“It should be a felony, not only at the federal level, but at the local level, for attacking letter carriers,” union VP James Henry said.
