Sergio Hudson Takes us Back to the 70s With his Fall/Winter 24 Collection
Written by Melinda Newman on February 16, 2024
Sergio Hudson‘s Fall 2024 collection is a vibrant exploration of color and texture, featuring a mix of leather and denim alongside striking statement pieces. Rich hues like acid yellow, jungle green, and cobalt blue are juxtaposed with camel, brown, and denim tones, creating a visually dynamic range. Functional corsets that cinch the waist, matte jersey and stretch wool dresses showcase Hudson’s attention to detail and craftsmanship. The collection also includes luxe fabrics such as stretch virgin wool suiting, pinstriped and double-breasted jumpsuits, and sumptuous cashmere coats, adding a sense of sophistication to the bold color palette.
“I think my creative process is very all over the place to be honest. But it always starts with a woman, a human being, because I had a couple seasons ago that was inspired by Prince. But, you know, it’s normally a woman, maybe, like a different group of women, maybe a decade, how women dress, but it always starts with an actual person. I’m not one of these designers that gets inspired by the weather or, you know, flowers. God, I envy those people that are really artistic. But that’s just not who I am so good. It always starts with a woman. Most of the time, it’s a particular decade, like, I’m really into 70’s right now. So like the past couple of collections, and the current selection that I’m working on, is very heavily 70’s inspired.” said Hudson
New techniques are introduced in this collection, including leather-front denim, leather corsets, and zipper-front dresses in leather and denim, adding a contemporary edge to the classic silhouettes. Hudson drew inspiration from 1970s fashion icons like Diahann Carroll, Bianca Jagger and Cher, all known for their fearless approach to style. These women embodied the spirit of the collection, wearing clothes that made bold statements and exuded confidence.
This season, Sergio has been particularly busy. Not only has he been designing his own collection but simultaneously creating a few pieces for the online retailer Rakuten—whom he partnered with—where customers can earn cash back on their purchases. “It was very organic. They asked if we’d be willing to partner with them, and once they told me about how they work and all the retailers they represent, I was like, ‘Oh my god, how did I not know about this?’ I immediately became a customer because I thought, ‘Oh my god, I could have been getting money back, right?’ I just feel like it’s such an amazing thing. I know it’s not a secret because a lot of people know about it, but I didn’t, so I feel like it was a secret, right? And just to be able to be a part of it is even more amazing to me.” said Sergio Hudson
